If you have a chance to visit Kyoto, go and explore some lesser known areas where you can meet locals and experience something you don’t get in famous tourist spots.
It is one of the most exciting and fun things to do when you are on a trip.
Imamiya Shrine is located in the north west of Kyoto city and it is in the vicinity of famous tourist spots such as the world famous Kinkaku-ji Temple, Daitoku-ji Temple which is deeply associated with Japanese tea culture and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, well known as a God of studies.
You will find a couple of long established Japanese confectionary shops on the road approaching. They offer “Aburi-Mochi” which is a bite-size grilled rice cake with sweet white miso sauce. They put soybean flour on the mochi before they are grilled and skewer them with bamboo.
It is said that originally the shrine started offering worshipers bamboo and rice cakes which were donated to the shrine as a charm to ward off evil and it has developed into Aburi-mochi and people enjoy eating it after they pray at the shrine.
Visit the shrine and try the local sweets with nice tea!!
