Nishiki Market is called “Kyoto’s Kitchen” by locals.
The market is a narrow and long shopping street and more than hundred shops and restaurants are lined on each side of the street.
They sell from food to traditional art crafts for example fresh seafood, Japanese pickles, sweets, Sushi, potteries and Japanese fans.
There are various old and new attractive shops such as a long-establish knives store and a SNOOPY café!
Also there are a lot of food stalls so you can buy snacks and walk and eat.

I think it is great to buy some gifts which makes you imagine “”Kyoto”.
If it is difficult for you to choose what to eat, let me give you some of my recommendations.
・Freshly-fried Kamaboko (Steamed fish-paste loaf)
・Skewered fresh seafood
・Deep fried chocolate balls! (Unique and popular)
・Rice dumplings with sweet soy sauce

The list is endless and you can also eat Shichimi (a mixture of red pepper and other spices) flavored ice-cream, freshly-fried donuts and pickles.

All the time this markets is crowded, especially at this time of the year.
It is too busy to move forward because the Kyoto locals visit the market to prepare meals for the coming year.

We go shopping for traditional pickles, Japanese Sake, black soy beans, seaweed, white miso and so on.
In Kyoto there is a custom to buy food at their favorite shops for a new year.

Please be careful of walking in the busy market but I recommend to visit the Kyoto’s Kitchen where you can feel close to the locals while you enjoy walk and eat in the market!
